45 Clever Small Bedroom Ideas to Create a Cozy Retreat

Like many people, one of the issues I have in my house is that none of the bedrooms are all that big. In fact, some of the bedrooms in my previous homes were even smaller.

So I am always trying to find ways to create a room that both looks good and is comfortable to be in. After reading this list of decorating ideas, you will see nothing but opportunity when designing your room.

1. White Boho Chic

I am absolutely in love with this look because it proves you can break the rules and have it turn out so beautifully! The choice to skip closets here is just brilliant.

Instead, they’ve used things like hanger bars, some simple shelves, and even boxes for storage. You can see how the clothes on display become this amazing, colorful backdrop behind the bed.

And for character? The knitted bed covers, a soft gauzy curtain, and that show-stopping chandelier just pull it all together perfectly.

2. Lots of Light

When you have a small room, your number one goal should be bringing in as much light as you possibly can. I think this narrow bedroom is a perfect example of that.

It feels so much wider and larger because of the crisp white walls, that big beautiful window, and all the lighting fixtures.

The little pops of color are a fantastic touch that keeps the space from feeling too sterile or plain.

3. Gold and Teal Minimalist

You can make a smaller bedroom feel absolutely huge on style just by using color! I am obsessed with this combination.

The bright gold bed is such a focal point that it immediately grabs your attention, and the dark teal wall creates this perfect balance so it’s not overwhelming.

When you put them together, you get a bedroom that’s completely captivating. Seriously, no one is even thinking about the room’s size with a look this good.

4. Bed in a Nook

This is just so charming, cozy, and creatively designed! The way the bed is installed makes it look like a comfy little nest built right into the wall.

I love how the design cleverly tucks the closets and shelves right into plain sight, which results in a space that feels incredibly neat and clean.

5. High Wall Shelves

This is such a smart organizing trick that I recommend to clients all the time! Get your stuff high up to free that precious floor space.

You can store all those things you don’t use very often completely out of the way. Installing shelves way up on the wall is a brilliant way to make use of that vertical area.

6. Pastels and Daybed

A daybed is a fantastic option because it’s every bit as comfortable as a regular bed. It’s also a bit smaller and gives you the flexibility to turn it into a sofa during the day.

When you pair that with some soft pastel colors and easy-to-reach storage, you have the perfect setup for a kid’s room.

7. White Brick Wall

This space just feels so clean, neat, and unbelievably comfy. By really focusing on what’s most important, this classic white bedroom achieves the best possible comfort in such a small area.

And that gorgeous rustic brick wall adds such a lovely vibe to the whole room.

8. Corner Bed

Sometimes you need at least a double bed but the room feels like it only has space for a narrow bunk. Here’s a great solution.

Just by pushing the bed into the corner that’s farthest from the door, you instantly open up the room and get the space you need. Then you can use all that wall area above for your storage.

9. Built-in Bed and Storage

I think building the bed right in with the closets is one of the smartest space-saving designs you can do.

You can dedicate one half of the room to the bed and all your storage, which leaves the other half completely open for walking around and for any other items you might have.

10. White and Neutral

White and tan are just two of those classic, timeless neutral colors. I love using white and other light color palettes because they make a room feel so much bigger and more open.

A great tip is to place your largest furniture, like the bed and desk, along the sides to really improve how you can move through the space.

11. Black and White

With the right styling, even a small room can feel so chic and fabulous! Just look at the bold black and white color blocks here, paired with smart and hidden storage.

That full glass window lets so much natural light stream in. Honestly, “small” is the last word that comes to mind when I see this bedroom.

12. Cool Blue

What a cool, cozy, and fun room! That dusky blue-grey color is so fascinating and comforting at the same time. Placing the bed to one side is a smart move that leaves the middle of the room clear for traffic.

I also love the clever storage they’ve worked in with under-the-bed drawers, side drawers, and those fun box shelves.

13. Large Mirrors

Adding a large mirror is one of those tried-and-true design tricks that just works every time. A mirror instantly makes a room feel bigger.

Not only does it reflect light, but it’s also a really functional piece that doesn’t take up a lot of space.

14. Raised Bed and Storage

When you just don’t have enough room for both a bed and your closets, here’s a brilliant idea. Put your entire storage solution right under the bed!

By raising the bed as high as you can, you can build in storage drawers underneath. I also noticed this bedroom uses the window sill as a nightstand, which is so clever.

15. White and Pink Minimalist

This small bedroom design is so charming and minimalist at the same time, which is a combination you don’t always see.

It works so well with the white walls, the touches of pink and grey, and the mirrors. I also love that the fluffy rug was brought in to add a layer of texture.

16. Less is More

When you’re designing a small bedroom, you really want to go for a look that feels bigger and cleaner. My advice is to simplify your design.

That means less clutter, fewer colors, and more open space. Then, just bring in one or two really stunning features that will define the whole room.

17. The Apartment Bedroom

Apartment bedrooms are usually small, but they are also comfortable spaces that have to make the most of every little nook and cranny.

I think this bedroom is a great example of that, and it’s so big on style with its mostly white palette. The use of space is really efficient, and the pretty touches of color and décor are just perfect.

18. Headboard Shelves

I love seeing custom-built headboards that are designed to be more functional. This kid’s bedroom design is a perfect example of incorporating the bed with headboard shelves.

What a creative and smart use of space!

19. Hide-Away Bed

The bed is always the biggest piece of furniture in a bedroom, and it takes up the most room. So, hiding the bed away can free up a ton of space!

This is such an ingenious design that tucks the bed away, creates a lot of storage, and still leaves a comfortable area to move around in.

20. Beautifully Basic

You can create a small yet beautiful bedroom just by adding in everything you need and nothing more. Guest rooms, for example, don’t require huge amounts of storage or personalization.

This is a perfect example of what a guest bedroom should be: basic, comfortable, neat, and so welcoming.

21. Overhead Lighting

This tiny bedroom would have felt so cramped without those overhead lights! It’s amazing what a difference they make.

If you can, installing a skylight is a great option, but if not, a couple of large lights that give off a warm glow is a fantastic substitute.

The floating shelves at the end of the room also provide that much-needed storage without crowding the limited space.

22. Modern Uptown Pink

There is absolutely nothing not to love about this modern uptown girl’s bedroom. The minimalist decor is so well done, with its cohesive pink shades, simple furniture, and that incredible wall art feature.

Yes, the room is on the small side, but with style like this, who’s complaining?

23. Loft Sleeping Area

If your horizontal space is limited, the best thing to do is go vertical. Building a loft for the bed is a brilliant move because it creates extra storage underneath.

It also smartly separates the sleeping area from the rest of the room, which I love.

24. Pretty Moroccan

I think this bedroom is so stylish without being over the top, and it feels roomy even with its limited space. The key is definitely the white walls, which project a sense of openness.

Then, a sprinkle of small, interesting, and colorful accents like the gold lamp, bright pillows, an exciting rug, and that elegant nightstand give the room so much character.

25. Beige Monochrome

While white walls are great for making a room feel bigger, I know they can sometimes feel a little too sterile or boring for some people.

A great way to break up the white is with off-white shades. Beige is a really cool, interesting, and popular neutral that I love because it goes well with almost any other color.

26. A Ladder Shelf

Ladder shelves are fantastic because they’re mobile and they give you the storage you need without taking up too much room.

This corner ladder shelf is designed so well; it lets you take full advantage of that otherwise awkward corner space.

27. Stacked Modular Shelving

The best solution for a horizontal space problem is to build upwards. I love these stacked modular shelves because they are so flexible and movable.

You could cover an entire wall with them, shift them to the other side of the room, paint the boxes, or even use some as tables and seats. The possibilities are endless!

28. Platform Bed and Storage

This is one of my favorite nifty and awesome ideas for a small bedroom. You can save money on a bed frame and gain so much space in your room.

Just buy a mattress and then build a storage platform for it. You end up with a seating area, a bed, and a ton of storage all in one.

29. Trendy Wall Storage

You have to get your stuff off the floor! These trendy and really attractive wall shelves are perfect for organizing all those small, odd items that you need to have handy and not hidden away.

Plus, with all their funky shapes, they double as cool wall features.

30. Charming Rustic

I think nothing goes better with a small bedroom than a charming rustic look.

It’s so easy to create that lovely farmhouse style with a lot of wood elements, neutral earth tones, and some classic country accents.

31. A Nook for a Nightstand

This gorgeous bedroom has such a smart space-saving feature. Look at that nook for a nightstand! You can completely forget about needing a side table; all you need is a little nook to put your things.

The overhead light installation is also brilliant because it gets rid of the need for a night lamp.

32. Sliding Closet Doors

Sliding doors are such a nifty and attractive space-saving idea. Since you don’t need that extra space to swing the doors open, they can work so well for bedrooms that are challenged for space.

33. Vibrant Colours

This room is so warm, refreshing, and vibrant! It’s such a great way to liven up your personal space with color.

I think the key to keeping it from looking overcrowded is to have a light and neutral backdrop. That really sets up the colors perfectly while keeping the whole design feeling calm and toned down.

34. Under-the-bed Storage

You can’t let that huge and accessible space under the bed go to waste. It’s the perfect spot to store almost anything because it’s so easy to get to but also completely out of sight.

You have a few options for this, including built-in drawers or pull-out baskets and boxes.

35. Large Windows

Using windows to open up your bedroom and visually make it bigger is such a great strategy.

Not only will large windows let in a ton of natural light, but they also extend your line of vision, which creates a room that feels so much larger.

36. Masculine Earth Tones

The cohesive color scheme in this masculine bedroom is what makes it appear larger, even though it goes against the usual rule of using light colors.

Another trick I’m seeing here is the use of thin horizontal lines everywhere. They guide your eyes to look across the room, giving you the illusion of more space.

37. Tall and Narrow Closets

You can get the most out of your limited space by building closets that are tall and narrow. This uses the entire height of the wall and is also better for organizing.

In this bedroom, they installed the closets and a desk at one end and put the bed at the other, which clears up that middle space for moving around.

38. Cosy Grey

This is such a delightful and cozy bedroom. I love how the light grey wall color makes the room feel bigger.

It’s so pleasing to the eye and creates the perfect backdrop for those pretty yellow and white decorative pieces.

39. Skylights

You want to open up the room to get as much natural light and the illusion of space as you can.

Besides the window and skylights, this bedroom also has white walls and very minimal decor that could otherwise cramp the space. It’s a winning combination!

40. Mirrored Walls

Here we have white walls, mirrors, large windows, and sliding doors all in one room. That’s all the space-creating features combined!

You can visually double the size of your bedroom by installing mirrors on a wall. This bedroom even features a whole wall of mirrored sliding closet doors, which is amazing.

41. Private Sleeping Space

Do you need a sitting room but just don’t have the space? A great trick is to just curtain off your bed, and you instantly have your own private area.

This is ideal for studio apartments or for an older kid’s bedroom. You can keep the room looking classy and uncluttered by having curtains professionally installed from ceiling to floor.

42. Pull-out Headboard Storage

That little bit of space behind a headboard can be used as a creative hiding spot for your small valuables. It can even serve as a hideaway nightstand.

The whole idea is to have specific places for your stuff, and if you can hide them from plain sight, it’s even better for a clean look.

43. Pull-out Closets

A room without clutter always looks better and bigger. You can step up your organizing game with some really efficient storage.

I love pull-out closets because they let you get to those hard-to-reach nooks. They’re also ideal for odd-shaped spaces like under the stairs or in an attic room.

44. Multi-Functional Add-ons

One of the most popular ideas for small bedrooms is to make sure every single thing you add to the room can do double duty.

Here, the shelf is both storage and a base for the light. The stool functions as a nightstand and extra storage, and you can even use it as a seat when you need one.

45. Corner Shelves

You can’t let any usable space go to waste. These corner floating shelves take advantage of that awkward corner that would normally be ignored.

They are so functional, serving as both storage and organizing help, and they even double as the nightstand!

46. Coastal Blues

Is there anything more spacious and larger than the sea? You can evoke that amazing sense of space and air just by bringing sea colors into your bedroom.

I love how this white and blue room uses the color blocking technique with all the different shades of blue.

47. Wall Nightstand

It’s always a good idea to keep things simple and efficient. This creatively designed feature is literally all the nightstand you could ever need.

It has a light installed right in it and enough space to hold all your bedside things. You can go small and functional but still be big on style and look.

48. Floating Shelves

Open storage spaces like floating shelves and open closets are a great way to get the storage you need without cramping the room.

The open design feature lets the room keep its sense of width and feels less closed in.

49. Behind-the-door Organisers

Closet doors are fantastic organizing platforms. The space is accessible yet totally hidden.

It’s the perfect spot to hide away all those small, odd things you need every single day. All you have to do is install some shelves, hangers, hooks, or bars.

50. White Modern

I love how this design gives a modern twist to a basic bedroom. The room is instantly updated with contemporary add-ons, including that white modern bureau, the large minimalist mirror, and the scaled-down windows.

The all-white color scheme is broken up just enough with those thin black line accents.
