One of the first things I do before I start any room refresh is find some design inspiration.
I have a pretty eclectic style, so I am not looking for one particular look. But I know that I want my home to feel updated and not flawed by dated designs.
So here are the successful DIY makeover ideas that I found as the inspiration for my next project.
1. From Drab to Fab
An unattractive backyard can feel like such a wasted opportunity. I love this transformation! First, they got the fence looking good again and added some flower boxes with built-in seating.
They either nurtured the lawn back to life or laid down some synthetic grass. After that, they refinished the patio, repainted the outdoor furniture, and finished it all off with some outdoor lights.
It’s a complete game-changer!
2. Mailbox Makeover
This is such a fantastic way to boost your curb appeal. Taking a tired old mailbox and turning it into this bright and eye-catching marker is just brilliant.
They took the old mailbox, gave it a fresh coat of paint, and installed it on a newly painted post. Adding the metal house number and that sweet little flowerpot is the perfect finishing touch.
No one will ever miss your house again!
3. Pantry Makeover
Let’s be honest, most of our pantries are just a jumble of food shoved wherever it fits. But you don’t need a whole new cabinet to fix it! This makeover is all about working with what you have.
They added shelves and organizers and swapped the old setup for U-shaped shelving. It makes everything so much more accessible, and the extra layers mean you can fit way more stuff.
4. Yard Reimagined
I always say you should never let your yard become an unsightly, empty space. You can so easily turn it into your own private hub!
This project involved installing a fence or screen walls and adding pavers to manage the grass. Then, they brought in a water feature, a fire pit, and some really comfortable seats. What a transformation!
5. Dressed Up Dining
I love seeing a generic, store-bought dining set turned into something so charming and unique. For the table, they lined the top with recycled wood planks and then painted the rest of it white.
The chairs got a coat of chalk paint, which was then strategically sanded for that gorgeous shabby chic look.
6. DIY Shaker Door
This is one of my favorite quick upgrades for a generic flat door. It’s so simple! Just add some plywood to the sides, attach three vertical bars, and then paint the whole thing white.
The black handle is the perfect finishing touch for that delightful Shaker style. It instantly looks so much more custom.
7. Easy Laundry Room Remodel
Wow, a couple of simple changes made such a huge improvement here. By adding a wood counter shelf and putting up that sleek, subtly striped wallpaper, the room feels so much more put-together.
It went from a chaotic space to a really efficient and stylish laundry room.
8. Kitchen Makeover
It’s amazing how this is the same kitchen, but with two completely different looks. A fresh coat of white paint totally breathed new life into the dated design.
They refaced the kitchen cabinets with white paint and also whitewashed the splashbacks, which gives it such a clean, bright feel. I just love it!
9. Easy Living Room Update
This living room went from drab to so lively and lovely! The makeover was beautiful and included a fresh coat of paint and replacing the old, tired rug.
They also added new curtains and decorated with some colorful, delightful accents. It makes such a huge difference!
10. Stairs Transformed
You can transform old, dated stairs so quickly and easily! All it takes is removing any old carpeting and then painting everything—the treads, risers, railings, and balustrades.
To get a chic look like this, the classic black and white combination is always a stunning choice.
11. Repurposed Trunk
Okay, don’t throw away that old trunk from your grandma just yet! This gorgeous center table, which also has storage, is actually a converted old trunk.
With some updated hardware, a fresh coat of paint, and a few new accents, you can have a completely new piece of furniture for a very minimal cost. I think it adds so much character.
12. Window Dressing
It’s time to say goodbye to dark, musty curtains and hello to light curtains and bright windows! Replacing chunky furniture with smaller, sleeker pieces and removing clutter makes a huge impact.
The result is a brighter and more spacious living room. It’s such an incredible difference!
13. Shower Floor Update
I’m obsessed with this easy shower floor improvement! It’s cheap, simple, and gives you a brand new, safer shower.
The slatted wood shower floor mat helps eliminate slippery floors and improves drainage, plus it looks amazing. Bringing in that wood element creates such a modern, rustic, spa-like ambiance.
14. Chandelier Transformation
From old and worn-out to totally chic and fabulous! You can breathe new life into an ancient chandelier.
Just remove the dated shades, spray paint the whole thing with a matte black, swap out the old bulbs for clear ones, and add some chic crystals. The result is stunning!
15. Patio Rehab
This is such a smart way to turn a nearly useless patio into a delightful hub. They banished the trash, extended the floor, and replaced the cement with composite wood flooring.
Opening up the kitchen window to add a bar is a brilliant touch. Then, they repainted the outside walls and added that charming hanging basket seat. So good!
16. Closet Rehab
Keeping up with closet clutter is so much easier when you have a good system. Adding shelves, drawers, dedicated spaces, and some basket organizers makes sorting and managing everything a breeze.
And a good tip is to throw away, donate, or sell anything you don’t use anymore to free up that much-needed space.
17. From Boring to Bright
A fresh coat of white paint, a new bed, lamps, and some crisp sheets can make a world of difference in a bedroom. The old, chunky bed with a headboard and footboard made the room feel crowded.
Swapping it for a sleeker one with a see-through headboard and no footboard was a great move. Adding charming details like a printed rug, white curtains, and perky pillows really completes the look.
18. Bathroom Change
This beautiful bathroom got a much-needed refresh. They got rid of the dated raised-panel cabinet doors and went with flat-panel ones instead.
The full mirror wall was replaced with a pair of framed, minimalist mirrors. Finally, that dated countertop was swapped for a sleeker material, like marble or soapstone.
The whole space feels so much more current!
19. Quick Front Door Upgrade
Look at how this plain orange door was upgraded into such an attractive and unique entry! By adding wood panels with different patterns and grains, the old door is now modern, rustic, and chic all at once.
Updating the fixtures to match the door’s sleek new design was the final, perfect step.
20. Pallet Wall Feature
Adding a pallet wall accent panel can bring a wonderful touch of rustic charm to a washed-out living room.
This space got a much-needed boost from a fresh coat of white paint, new white curtains, and reupholstered chairs. But that eye-catching pallet wall is really the star of the show!
21. Boring to Pretty Powder Room
A few wood planks, some time, and a little carpentry work were all it took to turn a boring powder room into this nice-looking and welcoming space.
They lined the end wall with wood planks and added some floating shelves and mood lighting. And that’s it! So simple and effective.
22. Ceiling Fan Update
Instead of replacing an old but still working ceiling fan, just update its look! I love this idea. You can carefully spray paint the body with a modern color like grey, black, or white.
Then do the same for the fan paddles, maybe choosing a different shade of the same color. Finally, replace the old bulbs with sleeker, brighter ones. It’s a brand new fan!
23. Bedroom Update
This went from a boring, hastily put-together bedroom to a delightful, personalized space. They repositioned the bed to catch more light from the windows and added a pair of nightstands and lamps.
Replacing the generic prints with personal ones and adding accents that reflect your personality is key to making it feel like your own sanctuary.
24. Verandah Revived
You can turn a boring verandah into a snazzy one so fast and easy. All they did was paint the interiors white, add bright accents like the blue rug and chairs, and replace the dated furniture.
The burlap curtains are a smart addition for shade and privacy when needed. It looks so inviting now!
25. Fun Home Office Transformation
